The Youth Service is a part of a wider youth offer currently delivered to young people across Devon.
This includes both other public service provision targeting young people and that within the voluntary and community sector.
Changes in Government policy, a need to focus on helping young people who need our help and support the most, and reducing public sector resources mean that we need to look carefully at the way that youth services are currently delivered.
The recent Ofsted inspection of Children’s services clearly highlights a need to strengthen our early help and preventative services and youth work has a key role to play in this.
Devon is now one of the few local authorities in the country still providing a universal service with some targeted projects and outreach.
A thorough review has therefore been called by the Council’s Cabinet to make sure we get the most from the available public resources and can build on existing strengths within our communities.
The review aims to build on previous engagement work with young people, staff, schools and voluntary sector providers and make detailed recommendations on the future of the service as a part of our offer to young people across the county.
During September the first round of face to face engagement events have taken place with input from over 400 young people, 130 Devon Youth Service staff and 140 community and voluntary representatives. There have been over 200 comments on this website with over 1500 different people visiting the site.
We continue to work through the vast amount of information fed back through this stage of the review, some of it needs checking, so please bear with us.
Follow up events to validate the Principles document developed from the engagement activity which took place in October and early November.
A revised needs analysis will be published early December, the locality based gap analysis is being aligned with other projects in the Council during this time to further inform the future Youth Offer.
The Principles document was published in draft form and will be updated to reflect the detailed responses from the validation activity after 12 November. It will be posted on the website for your information.
You can continue to have your say through the website but your comments will not be incorporated into this part of the review.
