Job title: Principal Civil Engineer

Area of work: Roads and waste

On completing my A-levels I enrolled at Nairobi University and went on to gain a degree in Civil Engineering. Soon after graduating I emigrated to Devon and started work with Devon County Council. That was back in February 1985.

Devon has been my first and only employer to date – and that tells its own story. The Council offered me excellent training and support, which enabled me to complete my professional exams and become a Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

At first it was challenging to succeed in a full-time job while my children were young. However, my work environment and the Council’s flexibility and support made this possible. My family is important to me and my career progression has been paced accordingly. Working for Devon County Council has given me the ability to balance my work and home life – and that means a lot. Looking back, I do not think there is anything I would change. My career has been very rewarding and satisfying and continues to remain so.
