Each year applications are invited for social work traineeships. This is in conjunction with the Open University.
We offer bursaries for the Traineeship Scheme to gain a BA Degree in Social Work linked to the Open University. We are looking for enthusiastic and highly motivated social care staff already employed within Children’s Services who would like to apply.
You will need to:
- have current or previous work experience in social care
- meet the entry requirements of the Open University Degree (see FAQ sheet for more information)
- have shown an interest in social work as a career through your supervision/appraisal process
- have the support of your Line Manager and Area/Operations Manager as you will remain in your substantive post during the course of the degree
Courses start each year in October and will be completed in three years (the expectation is for two modules to be undertaken per year; Any other arrangements will need to be discussed).

Devon County Council will pay the course fees, provide placement time and appropriate learning opportunities. To support your studies, the requirement is that you will be allocated 16 study days per module in levels 2 and 3 of the programme. There is no backfill for the time you are in a practice placement. Candidates will also be expected to work for Devon County Council for two years following qualification.
