Autism

Autism is a lifelong, developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people, and how they experience the world around them.

Research indicates that just over 1% of the UK adult population has a type of autism. That’s about 700,000 people on the autism spectrum.

Around a third of people with a learning disability may also be autistic.

The resources found from the  Skills for Care  Autism pages are useful for social care staff awareness

The resources from the Department for Health  are written for  social workers’ practice but  will be useful to  social care workers who  have frequent contact with people with  autism.

Short films on working with people with  autism can be found by using the search autism on the  SCIE website: http://www.scie.org.uk/
