Support available over summer holidays to families at risk of food poverty in Devon

There are over 1.5 million children in receipt of Free School Meals in the UK and millions more living in poverty. What will happen to these children during the school holidays? Some may not receive enough food, or the nutrition they need to live healthily.

Food high in fat, salt and sugar are often cheaper, but are detrimental to health. A poor diet over the holidays is likely to influence a child’s learning, health and opportunities when they return to school.

Food poverty is a complex issue – a few key issues have contributed to the problem, including in-work poverty, low incomes, welfare reform, unhealthy food environments, increased fuel and food prices, absence of free school meals in holidays and cost of transport.

We are asking professionals to consider if families they are in contact with might be at risk of holiday hunger. We have collated a list of free or low cost food providers in Devon which families can be signposted to for support over the summer. View the list here.
