Developing Reasoning KS1 and KS2

Reasoning is one of the three aims of the National Curriculum for Mathematics. It is not only important in its own right but impacts on the other two aims. Reasoning about what is already known in order to work out what is unknown will improve fluency.

The ability to reason also supports the application of mathematics and an ability to solve problems set in unfamiliar contexts. Research by Terezinha Nunes et al (2009) identified the ability to reason mathematically as the most important factor in a pupil’s success in mathematics but a recent review of maths inspections by Ofsted has revealed that reasoning is the ‘least well developed’ of the three aims.
