Surface Dressing work in Devon 2018
What are we doing?
The work is our surface dressing and micro-asphalt programme. The programme of work will be carried out between April and October, but each location should not be closed for a period of more than 5 days. This work is highly dependent on suitable weather conditions, so the programme dates are likely to be flexible.
Last year we carried out work at approximately 253 sites, over 224 miles of road in length and this year we will carry out works at 380 sites, over 275 miles in length.
Where is the work taking place?
The full list of locations for surface dressing and micro-asphalt being undertaken by Kiely Bros can be found here. Signs will be erected at the locations at least 7 days before the work is due to start.
Actual dates and diversion information is available at roadworks.org.
What is surface dressing and micro-asphalt?
Please see our dedicated surface dressing webpage which provides further information.
What if I live where the work is due to happen?
Each resident affected will receive a leaflet advising them that the work will take place. Generally, the work will take place between 8.00am and 6.00pm and vehicular access may be restricted during this time. However, pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the work. If you have any concerns or queries during the work, please ask for help from one of the operatives on site.
Why these locations when there are roads in a much worse condition?
Our approach to asset management includes preventative maintenance measures. This approach does not mean that we repair the worst roads first. This work is in line with that approach and will prevent over 275 miles of the local highway network from deteriorating. By using these techniques, we can maintain more of our roads for the same budget.
We will also be undertaking resurfacing work on 53.7 miles of our network, of which over 17 miles will be on A roads and the remainder on non-principal roads.
What happens when the work has been finished?
All sites will be swept after the final rolling of the surface dressing to remove surplus chippings. It is normal that, through the action of traffic, further chippings loss may occur over the weeks following the initial sweeping. This does not normally indicate a failure of the dressing. However, sites are regularly monitored to check and confirm this.
Any roads markings will be replaced; however, this is usually within 2 weeks. Please let us know if you have concerns about the condition of the site after the work has taken place.
