Cattle grid cleaning 2018/19

We are carrying out a countywide cleaning of cattle grids between December and March with each location being closed for up to 3 days.

The full list of locations can be found here. Signs will be erected at the locations at least 7 days before the work is due to start.

Actual dates and diversion information is available at devon.roadworks.org.

This work is highly dependent on suitable weather conditions, so dates and timings are likely to be flexible.

Why do we have to close the roads?

We must ensure the safety of our workforce and the public, and to comply with our safety guidelines we are unable to carry out this work without road closures.

However, we have worked hard to ensure that the closures are short time periods where possible to keep the disruption to road users to a minimum.

Why are there such long diversion routes?

We have a duty to direct traffic along a similar standard of road to that being closed so that all vehicles, including large articulated vehicles, can safely use the diversion routes.
Both the official diversion routes and the alternative routes for light vehicles will be treated with salt during periods of cold weather.

How is local traffic being handled?

Residents of dead end roads should make themselves known to the workmen on site.

Why can’t we do the work at night?

We are working on Saturdays to speed up the work, but night working has been ruled out because of the nature of the work being done.

What will happen to public and school bus services?

We have advised our contractors to carry out work during off-peak hours for the roads used by a bus service.
