B3230 – Muddiford retaining wall
Work will take place on the B3230 between Plaistow Mills and Rose Cottages, following an embankment collapse in December 2016.
The scheme commenced on 18 September and will continue for approximately 12 weeks (weather dependent).
What are we doing?
- Excavating some 4.5m deep beneath the carriageway, over a length of approximately 18m.
- Casting of a new mass concrete retaining wall to stabilise the road.
- Construction of a new stone masonry parapet.
- Resurfacing of the road and provision of new kerbing to the road edge.
When are we closing the road?
The road is planned to be closed 24hrs a day between 18 September and 22 December but may be opened sooner subject to favourable conditions.
Why do we have to close the road?
Whilst undertaking this work, we must ensure the safety of our workforce and the public at all times.
Due to constraints on working area and in line with our safety guidelines, we are unable to carry out this work without a road closure.
Why is there such a long diversion route?
We have a duty to direct traffic along a similar or higher classification of road to that being closed so that all vehicles, including large articulated vehicles, can safely navigate the diversion route.
Why are we doing the work now?
This work has been programmed to commence in September, so as to avoid the busy tourist period during the summer months and also stabilise the embankment prior to potential adverse weather conditions during the winter months.
The contractor carrying out this work is MacPlant Construction Ltd. Tel: 01288362111.
