Roadworks

A361 at Bray Viaduct

Work will be taking place on the A361 Bray Viaduct to the South of Barnstaple, on the main North Devon Link Road. The work will start on 2 January 2019 and will be carried out at night under two-way lights, although occasional weekend and day working may be required. Advance warning signs will be in place prior to this work.

The work will be split into two delivery phases of approximately 6 weeks each. Work in phase 1 will be to the Tiverton bound side of the road. Following completion, the traffic management will be switched to allow work on the Barnstaple bound carriageway.

Traffic management

Two-way lights will be in place between 7.00pm and 6.00am, five nights a week. This has been carefully planned to minimise disruption to the local area.

We will maintain a speed restriction either side of the work area and this will be in place 24 hours a day for the duration of the work.

Nighttime road closures

Nighttime closures will be required on:

  • 7 January
  • 10 February
  • 18 March

These closures will be in place from 7.00pm to  – 6.00am.  See the diversion route here.

Abnormal loads

Abnormal loads will not be able to travel over the Bray Viaduct while this work is taking place without first contacting the Traffic Control Safety Officer. Call 07989 472735 (24hrs) at least 5 working days in advance.

All notifications should be made through the current channels with Devon & Cornwall Police. Email abloads@devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk or call 01392 226177.

Hauliers will be advised of the available laybys east and west of the bridge for contractor assistance to be provided to move traffic management if required.

What is the cost of this work?

The work is expected to cost around £400,000. This includes the costs of labour, materials and traffic control.

Can I claim compensation?

There is no legal obligation or express statutory authority that enables Devon County Council to compensate for increased costs or any financial loss suffered as a result of the traffic management in place.

While every effort is made to inconvenience the public as little as possible there are times when, however regrettable, interruptions cannot be avoided.
