Getting the digital message out to parish and town councils

A real pleasure to meet the County Secretaries from the SW Association of Local Councils this morning. The topic:

Making digital work for local councils.

With Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Avon, Gloucestershire and Somerset represented, there was wide-ranging discussion around the role of digital and social media in ensuring effective communication and awareness for parish and town councils. Key challenge – introducing new-fangled technology to a generally older audience, but at the same time recognising that the younger generation are all digital natives and expect their information on a digital platform.

A few resources mentioned from this morning are included below, in summary:

  • The Prezi presentation
  • By way of illustration a brief Storify with some of the tweets
  • The Devon County Council guidelines on social media for elected councillors can be found here

Thanks to Leslie Smith and @CaraStobart both at @DevonALC for inviting me along.
