Register a birth

All births in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must be registered within 42 days of the child being born.

  • Where to register the birth

If the baby was born in Devon (excluding Plymouth and Torbay) you can register it at any of our 10 registration offices.

If the baby was born outside Devon you can declare it at one of our registration offices but we will have to send the documents to the district in which the birth took place.

In these circumstances, you will have to wait a few days before you can receive a birth certificate.

  • Book an appointment

You can book your appointment online. Alternatively, call us on 0345 155 1002. The appointment should take no more than 30 minutes.

  • Who can register a birth

Everything you need to know about who can register a birth, the information you will need and what to take to your appointment can be found at GOV.UK: Register a birth.

  • Re-register a birth

You can apply to re-register a birth if your situation changes after the original registration. For example, if the natural parents get married or if unmarried parents choose to add the natural father’s name to the registration.

To apply for the re-registration of a birth contact your local registration office.
