Devon Contractors selected for museum’s new extension project

Posted on: 25 May 2018

Local firm, Devon Contractors, has been awarded the contract to build the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon’s Long Bridge Wing Extension.

North Devon Council has committed a further £55,000 towards the £2 million project, after Herbert H Drew, who were initially awarded the contract, unfortunately went into administration earlier this month. Devon Contractors, which is based in Clyst St Mary, near Exeter has wide experience in refurbishing historical buildings, such as the Devonport Guildhall and St Aubyn’s Church, both in Plymouth and a wide variety of new builds in the educational, leisure and community sectors.

Although the project start date has now slipped slightly (due to Herbert H Drew going into
administration) Devon Contractors’ construction programme is shorter, so the completion date is still June 2019.

Executive Member for Parks, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Dick Jones, says: “This is a massive project, with over one and a half million pounds worth of external funding so it was really important that we acted quickly to appoint an alternative contractor. Devon Contractors is a Devon-based firm with lots of experience and I’m sure they’ll do us proud.”

Stuart O’Higgins, Contracts Manager at Devon Contractors says: “We were shortlisted on the original tender for these works and are very excited to be selected as the main contractor by North Devon Council. The Museum is an integral part of Barnstaple and North Devon, and we very much look forward to working with the council on this historical project.”

The museum closed its doors to the public earlier this month, in preparation for building work to begin on the project at the end of June. A temporary front of house is open in the Pop-Up museum across the road in Bridge Chambers. Education work and events will still continue throughout the year. You can contact the museum on 01271 346747 or museum@northdevon.gov.uk and follow progress of the project on the museum Facebook page.
