New homelessness legislation gets council backing

Posted on: 9 January 2018

North Devon Council has responded to new homelessness legislation by pledging their commitment to helping those in housing crisis.

At a meeting of the council’s Executive yesterday (Monday 8 January), members approved a plan to implement the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017, and endorsed a ‘Statement of Intent’, which sets out a number of commitments to the council’s legal and moral housing obligations.

The Homelessness Reduction Act 2017, which will come into effect in April 2017, requires local authorities to assess and provide more meaningful assistance to all people who are eligible and homeless, or threatened with homelessness.  The council has committed to supporting the new legislation by maximising its efforts to assist those in need as quickly as possible, targeting resources to the most vulnerable households, and working collaboratively with other organisations to prevent and relieve homelessness. Any support provided by the council will follow an assessment of the eligibility and needs of the applicant.

Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, Councillor Dick Jones says: “Homelessness can affect people from all walks of life and often through no fault of their own. It is vitally important that we have the resources to support people during what can be a very frightening time of their lives. We are committed to reducing homelessness in North Devon, and I am satisfied that we have taken this positive step forward.”

Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing, Councillor Brian Moores says: “The Act is an important new piece of legislation which will help those in housing need, and I am pleased that we, as a council, have a plan for how best to support individuals and families facing a homelessness crisis.”
