Leisure centre plans get the go-ahead

The entrance to North Devon Leisure Centre

Posted on: 15 December 2017

Plans for a new 25 metre swimming pool, sports hall and leisure facilities in Barnstaple have been granted outline planning approval.

North Devon Council’s application to extend the existing Tarka Tennis Centre at Seven Brethren Barnstaple, was approved by Planning Committee on Wednesday 13 December.

The exact design and mix of facilities will be developed by the chosen designers in the coming months, but will include a 25 metre, eight-lane main pool, learner pool, viewing area, 4-court sports hall, fitness suite, and exercise studios. The scheme will also include a new artificial grass pitch, whilst retaining one of the grass pitches at Tarka Tennis Centre.

Executive Member for Parks, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Dick Jones, says: “This is another milestone in what is an exciting project for the town, and for North Devon as a whole. The current leisure centre is well past its sell-by date and needs replacing very soon in order to carry on providing swimming and leisure facilities in the district. This is outline planning permission, which means the exact design proposals will be decided at a later date, but in principle the location and brief we have put forward today is acceptable to the planners.”

The council is currently out to tender for an operator to design, build, operate and maintain the new facilities. For more information and to follow the progress of the project, follow the council’s blog www.newleisurecentre.wordpress.com.

That’s Great News about the leisure centre will a seating area be included in the design around the sports hall as this will aid events and the hire of the hall?
