More options to pay for parking at North Devon Council car parks

Posted on: 5 September 2017

You can now pay to park using a credit or debit card at North Devon Council car parks.

The council has updated its parking machines to accept cards, which means you don’t need to worry if you haven’t got enough cash to hand. You can also pay to park with Apple Pay or Android Pay using the ‘swipe pad’. You can still pay using your mobile phone by calling RingGo or downloading the RingGo app.

There is a minimum charge of three hours in short-stay car parks when using a credit or debit card. You can make contactless payments and a receipt is available at the machine at time of purchase. Unfortunately American Express cards are not currently accepted.

North Devon Council Leader, Councillor Des Brailey, says: “We know that people like to have choice and providing more payment options will make things easier for car park users, especially if you arrive at a car park without any cash. Many people already use RingGo as it offers the flexibility to add to your stay without returning to your car to buy another ticket. You can find out more about this on our website.”

All of the council’s payment machines also accept the new £1 coin and will continue to take the old pound coin until 15 October, after which it will no longer be legal tender.

If you’re a frequent user, there is a range of parking permits available for residents, businesses and visitors, details of which are on the council’s website North Devon Council permits are only available for council-owned car parks, on-street permits are issued by Devon County Council, as stated on the permits.

Your press release hints that paying by card is a convenient option. Although you state the minimum fee you do not come clean and say the minimum fee includes in effect a surcharge. Not entirely honest is it.

The council is charged for every card transaction so in order to justify it we have set the minimum amount payable by card to £3.30.

Paying by card isn’t the only option for car parking, there is also RingGo using your mobile phone or cash.

Curious as to why a minimum of three hours when paying for parking by debit cards?

      Thank you for your comment.

There is no surcharge to customers who pay for parking by credit or debit card just a minimum charge. The minimum charge of £3.30 for three hours in short stay car parks for paying by card works out the same if a customer chooses to pay with cash for three hours.
