New Playing Pitch Strategy for northern Devon now online

Posted on: 28 June 2017

Local pitch sports clubs in North Devon and Torridge are being asked for feedback on a new Playing Pitch Strategy for the area.

North Devon Council and Torridge District Council have been working with Sport England and the National Governing Bodies for football, rugby union, cricket, hockey and bowls, to develop a 10-year Playing Pitch Strategy. The document will form part of the councils’ emerging Local Plan and be used as an evidence base to ensure appropriate funding can be drawn down from developers and national funders to improve playing pitch provision in the two districts.

The strategy has now been published online and the councils are asking for feedback on the draft by Tuesday 20 July 2017.

Executive Member for Parks, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Dick Jones, says: “Our strategy identifies the need, quality and location of outdoor sporting facilities in the area and will allow us to improve pitches, changing rooms and training venues according to the current and future needs of local sports groups. We consulted with these local groups back in November and we had an overwhelming response, which is fantastic because it means our strategy reflects their needs and aspirations. Now we want these groups to give us their feedback on the draft strategy, so we can make any improvements before it is finalised.”

Lead Member for Community Culture and Leisure at Torridge District Council, Councillor Phil Pennington, says: “This vital piece of work will assist both councils to determine the current use, standard and provision of training and playing pitch facilities within northern Devon. The work will also determine what additional provision will be required in future years in order to meet demand as our districts develop. A lot of work has already been done but there is still time to have your voice heard and take part. We hope that people will continue to make their views known before the deadline on 20 July.”
