Ilfracombe toilets back open following vandalism

Posted on: 24 February 2017

Wilder Road toilets in Ilfracombe are open to the public again following recent vandalism.

The toilets, which are owned by North Devon Council, had to be temporarily closed to repair damaged hand washing and drying facilities and urinals.

This financial year the council has spent over £5,000 repairing 21 cases of damage caused by vandalism on toilet facilities in Ilfracombe alone. This does not include the general cost of maintaining and running the facilities.

Executive Member for the Environment, Councillor Rodney Cann, says: “It is so disappointing that we have had to repair and temporarily close the toilets following this act of vandalism again in Ilfracombe. The money to do this comes from North Devon council tax payers and could be spent on providing other facilities and services across the district, instead of using it to put right this mindless damage.”

Reports of vandalism to toilet facilities owned by North Devon Council can be reported on 01271 327711 or customerservices@northdevon.gov.uk. Anybody who witnesses damage to property taking place can also report it to the police by calling 101.
