New Playing Pitch Strategy is underway for North Devon and Torridge
Posted on: 15 November 2016
North Devon and Torridge District Councils have begun work on a new strategy to enhance sports facilities in the area.
The Playing Pitch Strategy 2017-2027 will identify the need, quality and location of outdoor sporting facilities in the two districts. This will enable the two councils to improve pitches, changing rooms and training venues according to the current and future needs of residents, including locals sports groups. The strategy will be used as an evidence base to collect and allocate funding gleaned from housing developments and prioritise how this funding is spent.
The councils are working with Sport England and the national governing bodies for football, rugby, cricket, hockey and bowls to deliver the 10-year strategy. Bennett Leisure and Planning (BELAP) has been appointed to deliver the new strategy on behalf of the two councils.
During November, BELAP will be sending questionnaires to all local groups for the sports listed above.
North Devon Council’s Executive Member responsible for leisure, Councillor Dick Jones, says: “This is a great opportunity for local clubs to outline what facilities they need to sustain and develop sport in their communities and to ensure that their needs are recognised. Please respond to the questionnaire, or get in touch with us if you don’t receive one – your needs will drive and shape this strategy, so we really need to hear from you.”
Torridge District Council’s Lead Member for Community Culture and Leisure, Councillor Phil Pennington, says: “There is a clear need for more affordable sports facilities across Northern Devon and this is an opportunity to identify where these should be provided. I hope that people will let us know what they think so that we can build some of these ideas into future plans.”Leisure
