The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon is calling for former Barnstaple carnival queens to help with an upcoming exhibition.

The museum is gathering material for its summer exhibition ‘All the Fun of the Fair’, celebrating the history of Barnstaple’s Great Fair over the last 50 years – its ancient origins, customs and economic importance to the town.

The exhibition will be based on stories and memories of local people who have been involved with, or simply enjoyed the Fair over the years. As part of the exhibition the museum would like to create a display of ‘then and now’ photographs of former carnival queens.

Executive Member responsible for leisure and culture, Councillor Brian Moores, said: “The summer exhibition should be really fun and nostalgic, particularly for those of us who have visited the Fair over the last fifty years. If you were a Barnstaple carnival queen the museum would love to hear from you. What was the best and worst thing about being chosen as carnival queen and did you enjoy the experience? Get in contact with the museum and let us know.”

Museum Education Officer, Julian Vayne, said: “We’re really pleased that a number of local people have been happy to be interviewed as part of our oral history research for this exhibition. I’m sure there are more wonderful tales out there to be shared. Please get in touch with us if you’d like to take part.”

Contact the museum on 01271 346747 or send an email if you would like to get involved with the exhibition.
