Our North Devon – have your say at Barnstaple museum
Posted on: 20 May 2016
Have your say on the planned redevelopment of the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon, during a consultation event this half term.
From 28 May to 5 June, a temporary exhibition at the museum will showcase some of the 20th and 21st century objects from the museum collection to give a taste of what could be on display in the new gallery.
Local people are encouraged to have their say on what they would like to see in the proposed new gallery space and how the museum should tell the stories of Barnstaple and North Devon.
On Wednesday 1 June, families can pop in to the museum from 11am – 4pm for some free crafty fun. Museum staff will be using the craft session to ask children for their creative feedback as part of the consultation for a proposed new extension.
In January, North Devon Council was successful in an application to the Heritage Lottery Fund for over £69,000 to fund the development phase of a project to deliver a £1.8 million extension on the Long Bridge side of the building.
North Devon Council Executive Member responsible for culture, Councillor Dick Jones, said: “Part of the museum extension project includes consulting with users of all ages, including our youngest visitors. The museum is a cultural facility for all and it is very important that we ask those who use the service how we can improve it to meet their needs. I’m sure the museum also has some really fun ideas to engage with the young people who attend the free craft event on the Wednesday.”
The proposed extension at the North Devon Council owned museum would provide a new, high quality exhibition space as well as improving educational facilities, the tea-room and shop.
