A Barnstaple tennis club is going to have a new home and new tennis courts.
At yesterday’s meeting (3 May), North Devon Council’s Executive approved £27,200 of funding for the refurbishment of two tennis courts in the town as a new home for the Park Lane Lawn Tennis Club.
Following completion of the works, the tennis club will relocate to the site next to the Rock Park Bowling Club.
Executive Member responsible for leisure at North Devon Council, Councillor Dick Jones says: “It’s great that we can help support the tennis club move to a more suitable and permanent home. I think it’s a fantastic opportunity to maintain tennis facilities for those who currently play at the club and to help the club attract new players too. Our funding will also guarantee that public access to tennis is continued in Rock Park, as courts will be available for hire through prior arrangement with the club.”
Ward Members for Barnstaple Newport, Councillors Mike Harrison and John Mathews, said: “As local councillors for the ward, we are pleased that Park Lane Tennis Club and the council have worked together to enable the club to move to refurbished facilities. A new lease will also give the club security for the future.”
Chairman and Secretary of Park Lane Lawn Tennis Club, Paul Hollis, says: “The club is delighted that the council is supporting its relocation. It means that our future is now secure and with two high quality courts we will be able to develop and build for the future as a strong community based tennis club.”
The planned work includes resurfacing the courts, as well as some tree works to protect the new surface from root damage. Once the refurbishment of the courts is complete the club will be offered a 25-year full repairing and insuring lease, which will provide them with long term security.Posted in: Leisure
