Explore the life of A Man of Ilfracombe
Posted on: 14 April 2016
Explore the life and work of local Ilfracombe artist John Woodcock, at the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon.
‘Meet John Woodcock: A Man of Ilfracombe’ includes paintings, sculptures, prints and computer-generated illustrations, which are the result of a deeply personal journey and were mostly never intended for public display.
Born in 1927, John Woodcock has spent much of his long life in and around Ilfracombe and is a well known local figure. Until recently he has been actively involved in researching local history and the development of Ilfracombe museum. This exhibition reveals a lesser known aspect of his life – art.
With artistic influences including Augustus John, Michelangelo and Picasso, his work is inspired by his love of the local area, particularly as a child. His diverse themes include Greek mythology, dreams of space travel, rugby and Dante’s Divine Comedy.
North Devon Council Executive Member responsible for leisure and culture, Councillor Dick Jones, says: “This should be a really unique exhibition. It’s lovely to see a local artist showcased and recognised in this way. John Woodcock is obviously very passionate about Ilfracombe and the surrounding area, giving hours of his time to help chart its social history. Come along to the museum to find out more!”
The exhibition runs from Saturday 16 April to Saturday 21 May at the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon. The museum is open from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Saturday and admission is free. Check out the museum’s Facebook page to keep up to date with all the latest news and events.Posted in: Leisure
