Fund description:

The Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust supports individuals or groups based in the UK to undertake work that seeks to make positive change across the UK as a whole. The trust is open to funding a range of different organisations and approaches, but generally funds work that is about addressing the root causes of problems rather than delivering services or alleviating immediate needs.

The funding priorities include:

Peace and Security
Approaches based on participatory and accountable governance, human rights, non-violence, diplomacy and mediation, and environmental sustainability. Funding for charitable work on the priorities of

  • Challenging militarism
  • Scrutiny of counter-terrorism measures
  • Alternative approaches to defence and security

Power and Accountability
Looking for new opportunities for interconnected, engaged and flourishing democracy.

  • Strengthening corporate accountability
  • Strengthening democratic accountability
  • Encouraging responsible media

Rights and Justice
Maintaining and strengthening equality and human rights in order to protect the most vulnerable and in turn benefit the whole of society

  • Protection and promotion of equality and human rights and their enforcement in the UK
  • Promoting rights and justice for minorities who face the most severe forms of racism
  • Promotion of rights and justice for refugees and other migrants by identifying and tackling root causes, structures and systems that may deny them their rights

Sustainable Future
Developing and promoting sustainable, low-carbon alternatives

  • Better economics
  • Beyond consumerism
  • New voices – giving marginalised or under-represented groups a voice on economic and environmental issues
