Christmas message from Samantha Chapman, Early Years and Childcare Service Lead

On behalf of all the staff working in the Early Years and Childcare Service I would like to say a huge thank you to all our providers who have continued to ensure our children access the high quality education and childcare experiences that our Devon providers are well known for despite the ongoing challenges we face.

This year has seen the ongoing challenges of staffing, cost of living and inflation biting hard and the continued impact on children and families of COVID. Add to that, the government announcement regarding the expansion of the funded entitlements, early education and childcare sector has been put firmly on the map.

I have been heartened by the very positive response we have heard and felt from our providers despite what we all know will be a big ask. In order to deliver these changes we will have to work even more closely in partnership with our providers to ensure the sector can meet the challenges which we are being asked to respond to.

I have been able to feedback to the Council this week about what an amazing job our early years and childcare sector do by presenting our Childcare Sufficiency Audit report to the Cabinet. Despite some real challenge from some councillors due to the current areas where we do not have sufficient childcare it is recognised how hard the sector work, how much they contribute to so many aspects of the local authority’s work and making sure Devon is a great place to grow up, live and work.

Councillor Leadbetter asked us to pass on his thanks to both the team and to all the providers in recognition of the excellent work you all do and how important this is to the outcomes for children in Devon.

It is wonderful to be able to finish this term with this feedback and that just leaves me to wish you all a restful festive break and we look forward to working with you in the new year.

Sam
