Integrated Children’s Services re-procurement

Dear parents and carers,

We’d like to hear your views

As you may already know, the current Integrated Children’s Services contract across Devon is being renewed. This ‘re-procurement’ is an opportunity to ensure the service delivered is the best it can be. As a representative of Devon Parent Carers Voice (DPCV) I was pleased to be asked to form and chair a steering group to look at how young people, parents, and carers are involved in this process.

The group has its first meeting at the end of May and needs to work on many things. My first priority is to clearly define for the steering group’s members, Devon County Council, and you all as parents and carers, exactly what it is we will do, and how we will do it. The group’s purpose is to support, advise, and tell people what we think is needed. We have an important role in challenging decisions and choices, as well as pushing to secure the very best service for our children and young people.

To start we have had a look at what children, young people, parents, and carers have said about their services over the last few years. We reviewed this before we asked you about the main current issues via a recent Healthwatch Devon survey. All this has helped the commissioners understand where things are working well, and where they could be better. This process will carry on and will directly influence the drafting of the specification of the new service.

If you want to have your say, and make more of a difference for our children and young people please get involved with DPCV, come along to one of our events, read about us online, or contact us at www.devonparentcarersvoice.org . You can also follow us on Facebook. If you’re in Torbay you can contact www.torbayppf.org.uk , or in Plymouth www.plymouthpcv.co.uk . Also, if you have anything you want to know or wish to discuss about the children’s services procurement process, I’d really like to hear from you.

A bit about me

Many of you, most in fact, won’t know of me. I’m a parent and full-time carer to my 3 children (one’s an adult) with additional needs. I’ve done a range of voluntary work for a number of years, and continue to do so as a trustee for Devon Parent Carers’ Voice. I feel my skills are strongest when it comes to challenging. I’m always keen and never afraid to challenge health services, or local and central government, especially when it comes to matters that affect vulnerable children with disabilities and additional needs, their parents, carers, and wider families.

I won’t pretend I know it all or understand everything – far too many complex terms get used and annoying acronyms to make us all look stupid, but I will promise to do my best to get you the answers. I will take anything you want me to say to the steering group, anonymously or otherwise, and I promise I will do all I can to represent you all during this procurement process. I really do care what level and quality of service exists for our children, if I can help improve it I will.
