Victim Care Unit and Other Fraud Information
Devon and Cornwall Police have a Victim Care Unit where reported crimes are passed and the unit can check if someone needs further support and/or guidance. Their website at http://www.victimcaredevonandcornwall.org.uk/ is a very useful hub of information and referral sources that anyone can access for support. The Victim Care Unit can be contacted directly by anyone on 01392 475900 (public number). The manager there is Lulu Parnell (best contactable by email; email@example.com). They have a team of both employed staff and volunteers (including myself) who take on referral cases and ensure people are getting the support they need. They also work closely with Devon Trading Standards.
As well as this, Action Fraud is the UK’s national fraud and cyber crime reporting centre. They can be contacted on 0300 123 2040. The service is available 24/7 for both live fraud attacks and ongoing/past cases. You can also report online via their website at http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/.
Action fraud can provide a point of contact for advice and information about fraud, take information about a crime where the ‘victim’ has not given consent (although it will not be reported as a crime) and also take a report about a crime which can be recorded and passed to the local police force for further intervention if required.
Finally there is both the Telephone Preference Service (http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html) and the Mail Preference Service (http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/) which can help in stopping unsolicited mail.
Work Experience and Apprenticeships
We are continuing to build relationships with schools and colleges to encourage young people to consider careers in health and social care. We are also working with Job Centre Plus (JCP) Schools Advisors who will be working directly with a number of schools across the county to help them consider the wide range of opportunities available to them in all areas of work, and support them with more practical skills such as CV writing, mock interviews, and finding work experience. To support this work it would be very useful if we can give information to JCP, schools and colleges, listing care providers who offer work experience and apprenticeships. We’d be grateful if you can please answer the following questions:
- Does your organisation (or would you be prepared to) offer work experience to young people in school (Year 10 / 11 – 15 and 16 year olds)?
- Does your organisation (or would you be prepared to) offer work experience to jobseekers through Job Centre Plus?
- Does your organisation offer apprenticeships?
If you do offer this, please can you give the name and contact details of the person in your organisation who is responsible for this area of work.
If you have any questions about this please contact Nic Dunn by email firstname.lastname@example.org
Carers Pathways, who provide advice, care and support to people who have memory loss conditions and dementia, and their families, have developed especially arranged series of music collections from yesteryear on CD’s and Song Books to accompany them. These have proved to very popular with and beneficial to people with dementia.

Channel Awareness Training – Online Package
The e-learning includes information on how Channel links to the government’s counter-terrorism strategy (CONTEST) through the Prevent strategy. It also provides guidance on how to identify people who may be vulnerable to radicalisation and how to refer them into the Channel programme.
There are case studies to help users understand the process of identifying and referring vulnerable individuals, in addition to providing them with support, and is a good way of providing staff with a fundamental understanding of Channel. Users who successfully complete the eLearning (which takes approx. 25 minutes) can print off a certificate, which is a good way for managers to audit whether their staff have actually completed the training.
