Electrical hoists

Hoists are to be ordered by Moving and Handling assessors who have completed appropriate training

A full risk assessment must be carried out before any hoist is selected to ensure safety for service user and carer and compatibility with slings.

This must be documented on the SS10a Handling Assessment Summary and Plan (accessible through local intranet).

Moving and Handling assessors should ensure they have attended a Hoist training course and are responsible for keeping their training updated.

Joint visit with prescriber and technician is essential to select the most appropriate free standing track and to ensure track is in the correct position and meets the need.

The floor to ceiling posts will always be considered first as they do not take up as much floor space and can be positioned behind doors. If the environment is not suitable for the floor to ceiling posts the free standing frame will be considered. The free standing frame requires an even floor space for the base of the posts to secure to.

If the client is in an electric wheelchair it is advisable to consider a ceiling track due to the risk of the electric wheelchair knocking into the posts.

Free Standing Tracks can be used by a single carer if assessed as appropriate.

    Floor to ceiling posts dimensions-

Maximum height of frame (floor to top of the frame) 270cm

Maximum width of frame (inside of the frame) 290cm

    Free Standing dimensions-

Maximum height of frame (floor to top of the frame) 240cm

Maximum width of frame (inside of the frame) 300cm

    Base of posts- 108cm long

An additional 50cm needs to be deducted from the height of the frames to accommodate the voyager motor that is attached. Measurement taken from the top of frame to the voyager motor hock attachments.
