Apprenticeships – get in, go far with Devon County Council

Devon County Council’s two-year apprenticeship programme is now in its ninth year and it has recruited over 100 apprentices during this time. There are currently 34 apprentices and higher apprentices working in Business and Administration, Customer Service, ICT and Civil Engineering.

The Apprenticeship Scheme is going from strength to strength with the apprentices completing valuable qualifications and gaining experience to help them toward their future careers.

The Council’s Higher Level Apprenticeship Scheme won the Employer of the Year Award through the Exeter-based training provider ETS in March 2015.

For those that cannot wait for their career to start, have the motivation to work hard, gain nationally recognised qualifications and practical skills, while also earning a salary, Devon County Council’s apprenticeship programmes could be the right choice.

Apprentices develop valuable and professional work-based skills from the start of their programme and benefit from day-to-day support from colleagues, managers, trainers, fellow apprentices and the apprenticeship team. Apprentices also take advantage of a number of training sessions to develop interview techniques, presentation skills and customer service, all in addition to the programme qualifications. There is a diverse range of opportunities in different work areas: from Devon Work Hubs, Social media, Web Design and Marketing and Events to Transport Surveys, Civil Engineering and Lab Testing.

At the end of the programme many of the apprentices apply their skills and qualifications to secure permanent employment with the Council.

Robbie Kyme, now part of the Procurement team, says: “I’ve been surprised by many things that I’ve been working on: carrying out risk assessments, co-delivering a presentation to colleagues in Finance, the range of training sessions offered including presentation and interview skills, and the biggest surprise of all has been getting a permanent job here within the first year!”

The scheme will start to look for new apprentices in the summer. Vacancies will be advertised on www.devonjobs.gov.uk and through the National Apprenticeship Service. Recruitment takes place in July to September with apprentices starting work in September or October.
