The Committee on Standards in Public Life highlighted the ten principles of public life as; Selflessness, Honesty/Integrity, Objectivity, Accountability, Openness, Personal judgment, Respect for others, Duty to uphold the law, Stewardship and Leadership.
Whilst democratic election gives local councillors (like Members of Parliament) a special status in public life, it is not easy being a local councillor.
Confidence in the democratic process is so important that the ambition to serve on a council remains an honourable calling and should be recognised as such.
